There are a lot of reasons why Michigan didn’t have a great bowl record under Bo Schembechler. We could explain a lot of them. playing west coast teams in the Rose Bowl (particularly local teams USC and UCLA), the fact that several of Bo’s best teams didn’t even get a chance to go to a bowl game under the Big Ten’s old bowl eligibility rules (consider that from 1972-1974, Bo’s teams went 30-2-1 and played in zero bowl games), or pure and simple misfortune.

Bo’s first heart attack reminded Michigan fans that he was mortal, which they may have found hard to believe after his 24-12 upset of #1 Ohio State just a month earlier. Hospitalized, Bo handed the keys off to defensive coordinator Jim Young, but in a low scoring contest, the #4 USC Trojans of John McKay held off the Maize and Blue by a 10-3 margin.
