“Goodbye…Hello Heisman!” | U-M 31, OSU 3 (11/23/1991)
#4 Michigan capped off a perfect Big Ten campaign with an absolute demolition of the #18 Buckeyes. The game would nominally be known for the Wolverine defense knocking out OSU quarterback Kirk Herbstreit, but no, with Michigan leading 17-3, Desmond Howard took a punt from his own seven yard line and raced 93 yards to the south end zone. Keith Jackson, on the ABC call, stated “Goodbye” after Howard beat his last man, followed by “Hello Heisman”, acknowledging Howard’s position at the clear Heisman front runner. Howard would then provide one of the iconic images in all of college football history, when he struck the Heisman pose in the end zone.
The 28-point Michigan rout was the Maize and Blue’s most lopsided victory in over OSU since a 58-6 Michigan victory in 1946.
Michigan would go on to the Rose Bowl and Howard would go on to become Michigan’s second Heisman Trophy winner in school history.
