Michigan had gone 14 years since winning the Big Ten championship, but Ohio natives Bob Timberlake (Franklin, OH) and Jim Detwiler (Toledo, OH) made sure that the drought ended, scoring a touchdown set up by a Buckeye turnover and generally controlling the play in windy conditions at the Horseshoe.

With the win, Michigan would head to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1950, when they had won the Snow Bowl to punch their ticket to Pasadena.
