Purdoomed! | Purdue 16, U-M 14 (11/6/1976)
#1 in the nation Michigan travels to West Lafayette to take on a Purdue team that would finish 5-6. Under Bo, Michigan had not lost to another member of the Big Ten except for Ohio State, but on this day, in spite of a Rick Leach touchdown run and a 64 yard touchdown pass to Jim Smith, a Rob Lytle fumble and Bob Wood’s missed last second field goal attempt killed Michigan’s national title aspirations for another year. They would still win the Big Ten Championship and face USC in the Rose Bowl.
This would be the first of three times when a #1 Michigan team under Bo lost a Big Ten road game to an unranked opponent. You know what, this is depressing, let’s move on.
