The Myth of 1968 | U-M 36, Illinois 0 (11/9/1968)
Quick, without looking it up, what was Michigan’s record in 1968. Yep, 8-2, they finished the season #12 in the AP poll and #15 in the Coaches Poll. On this day in 1968, Bump’s bunch rolled the Illini by a 36-0 mark to improve to 7-1 on the year before a crowd of 56,775 at Michigan Stadium.
Two thing hurt Bump’s 1968 legacy. Small crowds at the Big House (seriously, with the exception of the Michigan State game, the stadium is never more than 3/4 full) and losing 50-14 to #1 and eventual national champion Ohio State in a game where Woody goes for two because he couldn’t go for three. But in Bump’s final season, Michigan was 8-2 and finished in second place outright in the Big Ten.
