Born on this day in 1912, the great Michigan track and football star Willis Ward. Best known for his role in the drama that played out before, during and after the ’34 Georgia Tech game, where Michigan caved to Tech’s Jim Crow tradition and Ward, an African American, was forced to sit out the game.
