• Jug 401: Did Yost really want the Little Brown Jug returned?

In this short video, I take a look at the origin story involving Michigan's coach Fielding H. Yost asking for the return of the jug after the 1903 game. I also take a look at the alleged the response from Minnesota that he and Michigan would need "to WIN it back." This story is important to origin story of college football oldest rivalry trophy tradition, but is it really what happened? I examine some of the problems with and much more in this video.

  • Moe’s Tailgate Contest Winners

The folks at Moe Sports/Underground Printing got a bunch of great entries for the "trick out your tailgate" contest and decided to do a couple things: Award three tailgates with custom shirts instead of just one as originally planned, see a breakdown below, and… Is considering awarding more winners as "tailgate of the week" this season based on the entries received.  Details TBD. Drum roll, the three tailgates selected: Grand Champion Jason Freeman & John Baciak – "Grey Lot Tailgate" What they get:  Forty (40) custom shirts made up and discounts to use at Moe’s for their tailgate members.   They’ll be the official tailgate of the UMass game. What put them over the top?   If you plan a theme this hard, you must be serious.  I haven’t met Jason or John (yet) but you should know I likes me Irish fare: Tailgate Theme: ST. PATRICK’S DAY TAILGATE  Description: With Massachusetts representing the state with the highest population of Irish Americans per capita, and with September 18th representing the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day, this one was TOO EASY!!! We’ll be celebrating this cosmic Irish alignment of circumstances in true stereotypical American fashion: by wearing green t-shirts and beaded necklaces, drinking green beer, enjoying some corned beef hash, potato skins, and cranking up the Irish tunes! This will be one…

  • Dufek’s Homer – The Call (audio)

Love this photo – mgoblue.com Certainly by now you’ve heard of Michigan’s epic comeback from down 14 runs to Northwestern this weekend on Senior Day.   The story made it to SportsCenter and prompted ESPN to ask, ‘Are you Serious?’ WTKA’s Ira Weintraub called the game on the radio and was kind enough to forward over a clip of his call the Dufek’s bomb.  Per Ira, “Not a great call, but not bad for a guy who has now called 8 baseball games in the last 10 years!!”   Not to bad indeed, and note Weintraub using the Harwell technique of letting the crowd and band paint the scene after the blast: [display_podcast] . For more, check out frequent mgoblog diarist FormerlyAnonymous who gave his account of the game.   (HT: Ace @ TWB) And speaking of WKTA 1050AM, Rich Maloney’s call into Sam and Ira this morning is worth a listen.   Maloney effectively acknowledged the was over at 13-0, telling his players that no team of his has ever quit during a game, and it wouldn’t be happening today.  That said, he did tell the guys that the wind was blowing out and their pitching was a bit depleted.  Who knew?  Unfortunately I don’t see the podcast up there yet; it is comes up I’ll toss up a link.

  • Power Index Week 4

Ugh.  Michigan dips further but somewhat surprisingly not quite yet at rock bottom, but just barely.  At the top, the Buckeyes hold their filthy grips on the top slot with the impressive win over Penn State.  Sorry for the delay: Comments from the pollsters: Biggie – What a fantastic fall day to enjoy college football.  Gotta a chance to tailgate at the “Bronco Bus” with a bunch of my buddies that attended WMU.  Western was the elixir MSU needed after two straight heartbreakers.  With Larry Caper sitting out the game, Ashton Leggett came out of  nowhere to earn himself some time at RB.  AL runs hard; he reminds me of Jehuu Caulcrick.  Cousins continues to prove that he is the QB for State.  Huge game next week in West Lafayette if Sparty has any intentions of going bowling.    Schlimmy – Maybe I’m not going out on a limb to far here but I believe that Brian Kelly will be the next coach at Michigan, whether that is a month from now, a year from now or beyond it seems like a perfect fit, obviously he’s been very successful at every level and has some ties to Michigan (Grand Valley and CMU)  In saying that I believe Rich Rod will get a least next year to turn things around but it…
