A quarterback and end for U-M from 1893-1896, Ferbert was best known as Michigan’s head football coach from 1897 to 1899. His teams put up a 24–3–1 when he was at the helm, the highlight being the 10-0 Western Conference championship squad of 1898. The victory over Chicago in the finale of the 1898 season inspired student Louis Elbel to write ‘The Victors’. Ferbert later tried his luck at gold prospecting in Alaska and apparently hit it big.
