Yes, this event is in Spartan Country but this is not an green and white cause–in fact you may know that Bo Schembechler participated in the Ann Arbor JDRF walk and was a big advocate of diabetes research and education. I know Coach Hoke is a supporter as well. I learned about this horrible disease when my nephew Jack was diagnosed at age 3. Fritz Gives Reader’s Digest the Gas Face
I always like to check out the old letters that pop up on eBay for stuff just like this. Back in 1962 athletic director Fritz Crisler submitted a story to Reader’s Digest on his college coach and mentor, Chicago legend Amos Alonzo Stagg. [As an aside, there’s a copy of the story at the Bentley Library in Crisler’s archives and I plan to check it out.] Fritz clearly had a deep admiration for his former coach. Heck, Sports Illustrated, in its wonderful 1964 piece on Crisler ‘The Man Who Changed Football’ even suggested the ‘1’ in the Michigan Stadium attendance might actually be reserved for Stagg!: It was his secret. But anyone is entitled to guess, and one guess might be that somewhere in that vast stadium there is this one seat, and perhaps it is never sold. Perhaps it is reserved, now and forever, for someone who taught Fritz Crisler a way of coaching football and a way of life. For the Old Man, Amos Alonzo Stagg. So coupling Crisler’s demeanor, his air-tight professionalism, and his admiration for his mentor I’m guessing Fritz put a lot of thought into the words he chose for this story for Reader’s Digest. For September 1 against Alabama via Media Relations. Key Points: New paint on the helmets to enhance the winged design and protect the surface. Helmet numbers continue for 1 more game (Bama) but will be discontinued beyond that. Big block M on the shoulder. Gloves that have the lyrics to ‘The Victors’ on them (Only Big Will has the whole song, haha). [poll id=65] U-M Unveils 2012 Football Uniform Plan; Commemorative Jerseys Planned for Cowboys Classic ANN ARBOR – The University of Michigan football program and official apparel provider, adidas, have teamed to create a commemorative road jersey for the 2012 season opener against Alabama on Sept. 1. Michigan, adidas and the school’s helmet providers have worked to match the colors in both the helmet and uniforms. For the Cowboys Classic Game against Alabama, the Wolverines will don a white road jersey with maize across the shoulders and down to the sleeve. Blue piping will separate the maize from the white on the jersey. A blue block ‘M’ will appear on the left and right sleeve of the jersey and the player numbers are blue. Arrrr, she can sail around your man cave: Nicely done. And it comes tricked out with nautical flags in what appears to be a personal hall of fame that the builder pulled together: Not to nitpick, but where’s Leach? (The 7 is for Henne). Benny Friedman? Harry Newman? Willie Heston should be honored in some manner. Rob Lytle? Germany Schulz? Someone needs to build an M pirate ship, the S.S. Yost, with the names of the forgotten Wolverine greats. <deep breath> Many would consider this a no-no, but he did leave a spot for a current player: You gotta love it.

From the Den of Michigan’s Mellow Men? (1969)
It sure looks authentic but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one before. Take a look at this 1969 Big Ten Championship Ring currently up for bid: Better resolution pics and descriptions available on the auction page, the seller is asking for $3,500 Buy it Now and is soliciting other offers. As I always do on these ring auctions, I’ll lead with the disclaimer that a) we don’t know if any of what the sellers claims are true, b) we don’t know the circumstances of how the ring ended up with the seller and c) don’t assume anything and d) don’t judge. That said…this is quite a specimen for sure and I’m guessing there’s a collector or two out there that would love to have this. This is of course would be part of the spoils of Bo’s legendary 24-12 shocker over Woody & the Buckeyes in Schembechler’s first season in Ann Arbor. On top of all that, the seller claims this ring originally belonged to one of the famous “Mellow Men” on the 1969 team. Via Media Relations: Red Berenson Agrees to Contract Extension Through 2015-16 Season ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan and ice hockey head coach Red Berenson have agreed to a three-year contract extension, Athletic Director Dave Brandon announced on Monday (July 16). Berenson is in the final season of his current contract and the extension will keep him at Michigan through the 2015-16 campaign. "I’m pleased that the administration and the program are looking ahead," said Berenson. "I’m excited about the opportunity to remain at Michigan, especially with the current Yost renovations, the move to the Big Ten and for our incoming recruits. We have a great staff here and I’m looking forward to the next few years at Michigan." Berenson has led the Michigan ice hockey program since 1984, winning two national titles (1996, 1998) along the way. He has guided the Wolverines to a record 22 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and has reached the Frozen Four on 11 occasions. Interview with Barb Cossman, U-M Media Relations
The University of Michigan has a long history of producing cutting-edge collegiate publications. Barb Cossman has run point on the content produced by U-M media relations since 2001. As editorial director, she oversees the creation of media guides and programs, including the special commemorative editions like we saw for 2011 Notre Dame ‘Under the Lights’ game. During Barb’s tenure, Michigan pioneered moving away from printed materials when they went to an all-digital media guide for the 2009 season. Over the past decade, thanks in large part to Cossman’s leadership, U-M’s publications have won multiple national awards. She was kind enough to chat with me about the past, present, and future of collegiate publications at U-M: MVictors: Michigan was one of the pioneers to eliminate the printed media guide by going purely digital. What prompted the move to go with a paperless media guide in 2009? Cossman: There were probably a few reasons. One of them was to save money, one of them, I like to think, was to save paper. And just the foresight that everything was moving to digital. The media guides, to that point, had served two purposes.
