Lights Out! Under the Lights I – Sights & Sounds | Michigan 35, Notre Dame 31 (2011)
In the intro of this week’s edition of ‘This Week in Michigan football History’, I said, “Time will tell if this tonight’s battle will be talked about for decades to come…” Well, it didn’t take much time to make that assessment and you can have that answer now if you’d like it. Yes, this will be talked about for decades to come.

This Keeps Getting Better
Couldn’t help but watch the tape of the final quarter when I got home last night this morning. I’m not sure how I missed former Michigan center Steve Everitt on the field at the game, but there he was chilling behind Hoke during the postgame chat with Erin Andrews in his lucky shirt: Contrast that with the big man’s mood at last year’s Wisconsin’s game. Don’t disturb the angry bear: Not happy. Here he is again from 2008, rocking the lucky shirt when he was honorary captain for the game: Update: Here’s my interview with Everitt right after the final whistle. He seemed a bit confused: [display_podcast] Everitt Rules! Much more: Lights Out! Desmond Howard – Inaugural ‘Michigan Legend’ Honored
Here’s the official press release from U-M media relations and the newly installed practice of creating ‘Michigan Legends’: Desmond Howard to Be Inaugural “Michigan Football Legend” ANN ARBOR – University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon announced today (Saturday, Sept. 10) that former football standout Desmond Howard will be the first player in program history to receive the designation of a “Michigan Football Legend.” The announcement came during a pre-game ceremony honoring Howard at the “Under the Lights” game between Michigan and Notre Dame. Howard will be honored in perpetuity with his name always adorning the #21 jersey at Michigan. A patch over the left upper chest will be affixed to the #21 jersey currently worn by Junior Hemingway and all other future players donning Howard’s jersey number. “This is a great way to honor our legends,” said Brandon. “Desmond will be the first in what will become a unique way to honor some of our Michigan football greats. Many of our current fans and players don’t know or remember the five jerseys that we have previously retired and who wore them. This concept is a visible representation of iconic figures in our program’s storied history that fans across the country will see every Saturday.” In addition to the permanent patch, Howard will be the first Michigan Football Legend to…

Not Yet Under Those Lights (Photos)
Just a few shots from pre-pre-pre-game. And for those out of town, the miserable day we had this morning turned perfect–sunny, a few clouds in the sky as of 5:30pm EDT. Heisman Caliber Accessories
Check out this close up of Desmond at the GameDay desk from this morning: First off, you’ve gotta love the custom cufflinks. The one on his right cuff appears to be a photo of one of his sons. (I assume the left features another son). Love that. Next, is the ring. My instincts tell me that that’s not a Michigan ring, rather, it’s a College Hall of Fame ring. We had this discussion a few years back when I discussed the band Dan Dierdorf donned on a 2008 CBS broadcast: Reader David, who seemed to be in the know, asserted that the ring I spotted was indeed Dierdorf’s CHOF ring: Actually he wears one ring on each hand. On his right hand is his College Football Hall of Fame ring and on the left hand is his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring. Both have blue stones, but the one in the picture (right hand) is his College Hall of Fame ring which has a larger blue stone. I doubt I’ll see Desmond buzzing around in the press box but if I do, I’ll get on that. As far as the pink pen, discuss amongst yourselves.
