• Carr’s Wash Yields $ and Info

Saturday marked the latest edition of the “Carr’s Wash for Kids” as the Michigan football team assembled at Michigan stadium to clean the cars of the good people of Ann Arbor. All told the gang polished 536 automobiles and raised over $175,000. Added to the total from the Takeover of WTKA 1050AM, the team’s efforts on Thursday and Saturday raised around $300,000 for the new C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Here’s more on the hospital and how you can still support this cause. The Ann Arbor News dispatched a few folks out there including Jim Carty who confirmed a few interesting items: Arrington’s Steps Back: Not a big surprise, but Carty caught up with talented receiver Adrian Arrington who was at the Wash and confirmed he’s back on the team. His penance? 60 Straight days of running the steps of Michigan stadium. The stink eye for Harbaugh: Don’t know the specifics, Carty reported that Coach Carr didn’t have any kind words for Jim Harbaugh given his recent comments reflecting negative on the program. Carty wrote “Carr had no comment [on Harbaugh]..but made it clear he’s not happy…”. Oh, to have seen the look on his face as he grumbled “no comment”. Mallett’s Misery: Cocky freshman QB Ryan Mallett was quite the center of attention on Thursday and Saturday, as folks from…

  • MVictors to Sponsor JDRF Golf

Ah yes, MVictors.com will be a distinguished beverage sponsor at this year’s Golf Classic supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). It’s a great event held on Monday June 11 at the beautiful Franklin Hills Country Club. Detroit Lion back Kevin Jones will be the honorary guest. Interested in helping out with JDRF? Email the MVictors.com webmaster, or contact JDRF Detroit or find a local chapter in your area. Here’s more about JDRF and its mission: JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1 billion to diabetes research, including more than $122 million in FY2006. In FY2006, the Foundation funded 500 centers, grants and fellowships in 20 countries.

  • Griese, Huge Propel Takeover

Props to Brian Griese and Bill ‘Huge’ Simonson who helped the Michigan football team and WTKA raise over $117,000 for the new Mott Children’s hospital. Here’s more from mgoblue.com. The former national champion QB called in the last hour of the telethon and offered to match dollar for dollar each pledge made in the final 52 minutes. Simonson broadcast his show from the Ann Arbor studio and helped expand the reach of the telethon to stations around the state. In those final minutes callers donated over $31,000 and with Griese’s match put the total way over the $80,000 goal. This site has been critical of WTKA in recent posts but this is certainly worthy of praise. The final hour also featured the conclusion of Lloyd Carr’s turn at the microphone (he went for about 2 hours) and Mike Hart. Hart was joined by Saline native and freshman tailback Vince Helmuth of whom Hart referred to as “my fullback”.

  • Wall Street Journal on Taxes & Stadium Renovation

Wednesday’s [12/27/06] Wall Street Journal featured a piece in its Marketplace section titled “Tax Breaks for Skyboxes” [full article here]. The article by Daniel Golden focused on convertroversy around tax breaks that the donors receive for leasing the boxes from universities and it focused on the biggest of the recent college renovation plans: The Big House. Here’s an interesting quote from U of M regent Laurence Deitch, although I’m not sure what this has to do with taxes: Opponents of Michigan’s renovation doubt the university will find enough customers for its luxury suites, where alcohol will be banned. “Why pay a whole bunch of money, drive up to Ann Arbor, sit behind a glass wall and not be able to get a beer,” says Laurence Deitch, one of two regents on the university’s eight-member board who voted against the plan last month. “I think I’d stay home.”

  • Michigan Marrow Drive 2006

M Open Doors on Sunday to support Slade, Marrow Registry ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN SEPTEMBER 3, 2006 In support of Dr. Tom Slade, M quarterback from ’71-’73 who has leukemia, Michigan sponsored a blood drive and bone marrow testing event at the Junge Family Center on Sunday after the game. Abby and I stopped by to check it out and to join for the bone marrow registry. It was very simple: fill out a form, primarily with contact info for me and my alternative contacts, and take a swab of my cheeks (mouth, that is). They provide 4 bar-coded swab sticks (like long q-tips), and a kit to store and mail in the swabs. It is a common misperception that they need blood or marrow to determine your ‘type’, but all they actually need is some DNA. Overall, the whole process took about ten minutes. Here’s more information about the event and how to get involved. As far as the Junge Family Center – while I didn’t get a full tour, it seemed pretty basic. A large room with some nice wide screen TV monitors around the perimeter. Certainly it is a perfect gathering place before the games for players’ families.
