I finally made it out to Yost to see the Wolverines skate on Friday. It started off with a few sodas at Frasers and then we made it over to the game. Parking was a little brutal given the snow that rolled in this past week but we made it in with plenty of time. As we were looking for a spot we heard that Coach Berenson dismissed freshman Kevin Quick from the team so things were a little uneasy from the get go. The 3-3 result of Friday’s game [recap MLive] was a big disappointment but the action and play were not. I went in expecting an easy win over Northern Michigan but those guys played tough. After NMU netted the first score and then added a short-handed tally you knew it was going to be tight. All this said, Michigan had 20 more shots on goal (44-24, complete boxscore) and definitely had better chances. A few mistakes handling the puck and there you have it. Hobey Baker candidate Kevin Porter looked great, very nice puck handling, very quick… but I was really impressed with Travis Turnbull. He scored a great goal, added an assist and drew a key penalty on a breakaway. All in all another great time at Yost. It was then back to Fraser’s for postgame…

Beat State! Twice
A huge one tonight in Ann Arbor then again Saturday at Munn as your #1 Wolverines take on the defending NCAA champs. Going to the game? Send along some photos and on your deathbed you will receive total consciousness. As for me, enough is enough and I’ll be hitting Yost next Friday for the Northern Michigan game with bells on. (Pregame sodas at Fraser’s. Post-game plan is cheesesteaks at Spots pending the results of the 50/50 raffle.)

Love for Coach Rod, Shaq
Coach Rod is receiving rave reviews with the fans and media for his bluntness and candidness. And he’s not stopping with the fans and the media. Remember the group of former alumni that met the team prior to the Notre Dame and Ohio State games, and all those that petitioned Bill Martin to consider Les Miles? Well, Rodriguez is working on something for them, from John Heuser in the Ann Arbor News Sunday: Wolverine reunion In an effort to introduce himself and his staff to former Michigan players, Rodriguez plans to host an event in Ann Arbor in February. “I want to meet all the guys that played here. I didn’t play here, so I didn’t know a lot of them. But I know how much pride they have in this place, and I want to meet ’em and talk to ’em, and I want to make sure all the former players feel welcome coming back here, and I think they will once they meet all the former players and staff members.” According to MVictors reader TC, the hockey game appearance went over big-time with the students. Apparently he didn’t just show up for an interview and to slap the puck across the ice. Here’s TC’s recap and take: Not only did he do a ceremonial puck drop he also…

The audio from Red Berenson’s interview on the Stoney and Wojo show today discussing the GLI and more. Art Regner filled in for the hosts:

Cold War II in 2008
The Free Press is reporting today the Red Berenson and MSU coach Rick Comley are in talks to hold a game at Ford Field next December. That’s great, but wasn’t the whole novelty of the Cold War was that it was played outside? Michigan and Michigan State play several times each year and sometimes on neutral sites (GLI). Branding it another Cold War diminishes the efforts of the people in 2001 that tailgated, got their drink on and attended that game.
