The History of Michigan Football Vol I (1879-1927): Education and Athletics

PURPOSE Go Blue! We are building an interest list for a compelling new project: a 12-lecture online course from the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education. Titled “The History of Michigan Football Vol I,” this course will explore the program’s journey from its 19th-century origins up to the opening of Michigan Stadium in 1927.

WHAT IS IT? This course is entirely online and pre-recorded, allowing you to learn on your own time and at your own pace. Choose your own adventure: sit back and enjoy the lectures, or dive deep into the full college experience complete with readings, quizzes, and reflective short-answer essays!

WHY? You asked, and we listened! In response to incredible demand from the Wolverine community for more ways to engage with the university, we are thrilled to bring this class to life. Designed for passionate fans, proud alumni, and sports historians alike, this course opens the U-M vault to everyone. Together, we’ll trace the legendary roots of Michigan football—exploring the birth of the sport, the foundational years of the program, and the iconic Yost era that culminated in the opening of the Big House.

WHO and WHERE? Led by Greg Dooley, this course brings Michigan history to life. Filmed at the Marsal School of Education and on location across campus—including Schembechler Hall, the Michigan Union, Angell Hall, Ferry Field, and Yost Ice Arena—the series features hundreds of archival photos and rare news clippings. Deepening the narrative are contributions from a stellar lineup of guest historians, including Dave Revsine, John Kryk, John Behee, Robert Soderstrom, Seth Fisher, and Craig Ross.
