The folks at Moe Sports/Underground Printing got a bunch of great entries for the "trick out your tailgate" contest and decided to do a couple things:
- Award three tailgates with custom shirts instead of just one as originally planned, see a breakdown below, and…
- Is considering awarding more winners as "tailgate of the week" this season based on the entries received. Details TBD.
Drum roll, the three tailgates selected:
Grand Champion
Jason Freeman & John Baciak – "Grey Lot Tailgate"
What they get: Forty (40) custom shirts made up and discounts to use at Moe’s for their tailgate members. They’ll be the official tailgate of the UMass game.
What put them over the top? If you plan a theme this hard, you must be serious. I haven’t met Jason or John (yet) but you should know I likes me Irish fare:
Tailgate Theme: ST. PATRICK’S DAY TAILGATE
Description: With Massachusetts representing the state with the highest population of Irish Americans per capita, and with September 18th representing the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day, this one was TOO EASY!!! We’ll be celebrating this cosmic Irish alignment of circumstances in true stereotypical American fashion: by wearing green t-shirts and beaded necklaces, drinking green beer, enjoying some corned beef hash, potato skins, and cranking up the Irish tunes! This will be one of the only times that it’s acceptable (and encouraged) to wear green at the Grey Lot Tailgates (with the exception of our distant acquaintances from East Lansing on October 9th). Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!
Runner-up #1
Kristen and Todd Mitchell – 18th hole U-M Golf Course
What they get: Twenty-five (25) custom shirts made up and discounts to use at Moe’s for their tailgate members. They’ll be the official co-tailgate of the Bowling Green game.
What put them over the top? They rock. The Mitchells and crew are out there for every tailgating opportunity, spring game, fan day, regular season, etc. etc. Big Ten journalist Melanie Collins even covered their tailgate for BTN last season. Oh, and the food selection is consistently off-the-charts:
3. Best Food Served?
- Breakfast – Feta Cheese and Prosciutto Strata
- Lunch – Rotisserie Prime rib sandwiches
- Dinner – Deep fried turkey or sea food boil
Runner-up #2
Mark – Conlin Tailgate Army – #2 Fairway of Ann Arbor Golf and Outing
What they get: Twenty-five (25) custom shirts made up and discounts to use at Moe’s for their tailgate members. Along with the Mitchells on the other side of the fence, they’ll be the official co-tailgate of the Bowling Green game.
What put them over the top? Pandering to the ladies is never a bad idea, but The Army is in the winner’s circle thanks to the banner:
The ladies like Deb’s delight, which is mandarin vodka, cranberry and a splash of grapefruit. Most of the men drink beer but rest assured we maintain a full bar that is capable of fulfilling anyone’s cocktail wish. Our official drink is the worlds best maize and blue jello shots. Absolutely the best recipe and a fan favorite. Finally, how can you not select a group that has a banner hanging with their motto that reads, “This one, one more, then we’re outta here.”
Congrats to the winners, the folks at Moe’s will be in touch. To to the other entrants, keep your ears on.
But sure to check out Moe Sports Online and Underground Printing or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MoeSportShop.

How can a University of Michigan tailgate who's theme is GREEN win the Grand Championship?
