  • Live! The 2011 Michigan Football Bust

It’s an MVictors tradition and admittedly an odd one at that.  I don’t live blog unless we’ve got a bust on our hands, and this will be the third year running.   You should join in case Grobin [sic] strikes back: The bust starts at 5pm but there’s usually autographs and speeches from the alumni reps for the first couple hours.  I’ll start it up once the action hits the stage and particularly during Desmond’s opening remarks, Hoke’s word and of course the speeches by the seniors, probably around 6:30pm or 7. 2011 Michigan Football Bust

  • The Cibola Victors

Tip of the hat to MVictors undercover agent Kelley.   Check out the posted lyrics to the fight song of Yuma, Arizona’s Cibola High School: I ran this through the CSI Hard Evidence comparison widget and it came back as a 106% match to Louis Elbel’s original, ‘The Victors’.   Perhaps it’s fair game since Elbel himself borrowed the melody from his pal George Rosenberg or more importantly, it was published before 1923 and is in the public domain.  Either way, Dave Brandon is on the horn with the marketing department and his jet is warming up as I type.   The Cibola High gym will be a pile of rubble before the sun goes down.

  • Rich Rod Returns (Huge Show Audio 12-08)

New Arizona coach Richard Rodriguez joined The Huge Show today: [display_podcast] Notes: * He talked about the circumstances around getting the new job. * Said he met with the Arizona AD at the Detroit airport new a lot about * Ask if he felt he would have gone 10-2 this season.  “Yep.  At least..”   Then laughed a bit and said how a coach is always confident. * He keeps in touch with the Michigan players.  Happy for them for the success this year. * Has he put the frustration of Michigan behind him?  “Oh yeah..”  Says he got past it during the 6-7 months doing TV on CBS. * On what he learned at Michigan will make him better.  Said he needs everyone around him “pulling in the same direction..” * Anything he would have done differently. “Ohhhh yeah, there is….”   Said there wasn’t one thing, but mentioned defense first then rattled off a series of reasons (injuries, etc.).  “I prefer not to think about it..” * On the comment he’d like to play Michigan.   Said it was blown out of proportion, and wouldn’t want to play the players he recruited.  Said the comment was in jest. * For the corduroy patch crowd, yes, he used the word “irregardless” * Asked to breakdown the Sugar Bowl.  “Going to be a…

  • 1930s Michigan Football Video?

Thanks to Jim for passing this along.  Up on AnnArbor.com now, writer Nathan Bomey explains how a old home video of what appears to be a 1930s-era Michigan football game at the Big House surfaced: The startup, Priceless Photo Preservation, restored a home movie featuring “field-level footage of a Michigan football game inside the newly built (and nearly empty) Michigan Stadium,” co-founder Rob Hoffman said in an email. The video owner, Ann Arbor native Susan Pearlman, said her grandfather, Ovid Weldon, shot the film, which shows extensive action featuring the Michigan football team, marching band and several views of the crowd. Two punts are clearly visible. Pearlman believes that her grandfather, who earned a degree in landscape architecture from U-M in the late 1920s, shot the film sometime between 1931 and 1935 because other footage on the reel shows her father or uncle as a toddler. Her uncle was born in 1928, and her father was born in 1932. She said no one had seen the video since at least 1960, when her grandfather died. Here’s the video:   It’s definitely the Big House of course, but there’s not enough data offhand for me to place the year or the opponent for that matter.  The uniforms look very similar to the footage that’s in the Black and Blue documentary on…

  • Big Ten Statement on Penn State

Just released, via Big Ten Media Relations: Big Ten Statement on Penn State Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) held its regularly scheduled meeting this week with several items on its Agenda, including the series of events recently unfolding at Penn State University. With regard to the Penn State matter, the Big Ten office issued the following statement on behalf of the COP/C: The Big Ten Presidents and Chancellors express their sincere concern for any harm done to innocent young victims and their families.  Protection of our children is one of society’s most central responsibilities and institutions of higher education should be particularly vigilant.  We are committed to examining our own institutions to assure that effective measures are taken to assure the safety of children on our campuses.  It has been approximately one month since the initial release of the Grand Jury report in the Penn State matter and a number of federal, state and institutional investigations have been launched.  While it is premature to reach any conclusions regarding civil or criminal liability arising out of these events, there does appear to be sufficient information to raise significant concerns as to whether a concentration of power in a single individual or program may have threatened or eroded institutional control of intercollegiate athletics at Penn State. …

  • Sweetness: Michigan Heads to Sugar Bowl

Just a few Sugar Bowl bullets in the aftermath of the selection show and the reaction over the past few days: > New Orleans.  The site of one of the most heartbreaking moments as a Michigan fan.  As a student in 1993, I saw it all play out about 15 rows behind the bench at a student and still remember the feeling after that game.  Or maybe it was the hangover from being at Pat O’Brien’s until 4am Sunday morning after the Kentucky win.  It’ll be my first time back and there will certainly be some memories. > BCS.   So it’s nice, I suppose, to be selected to play in a BCS bowl, and being the main attraction on Jan 3rd is a nice benefit.  We know why Michigan and Tech were selected.   But beyond that, I don’t consider it a great feather in our collective fedora that Michigan was selected to a BCS bowl.    To me, outside of the national championship game and the Rose Bowl, the only thing I want to see is a decent venue and more importantly, a quality opponent.   I have a feeling that many M fans were so hung up on the concept of getting a BCS bowl bid and by-passing the Spartans in the pecking order that they would have settled for anyone…
