1930s Michigan Football Video?
Thanks to Jim for passing this along. Up on AnnArbor.com now, writer Nathan Bomey explains how a old home video of what appears to be a 1930s-era Michigan football game at the Big House surfaced: The startup, Priceless Photo Preservation, restored a home movie featuring “field-level footage of a Michigan football game inside the newly built (and nearly empty) Michigan Stadium,” co-founder Rob Hoffman said in an email. The video owner, Ann Arbor native Susan Pearlman, said her grandfather, Ovid Weldon, shot the film, which shows extensive action featuring the Michigan football team, marching band and several views of the crowd. Two punts are clearly visible. Pearlman believes that her grandfather, who earned a degree in landscape architecture from U-M in the late 1920s, shot the film sometime between 1931 and 1935 because other footage on the reel shows her father or uncle as a toddler. Her uncle was born in 1928, and her father was born in 1932. She said no one had seen the video since at least 1960, when her grandfather died. Here’s the video: It’s definitely the Big House of course, but there’s not enough data offhand for me to place the year or the opponent for that matter. The uniforms look very similar to the footage that’s in the Black and Blue documentary on…

Big Ten Statement on Penn State
Just released, via Big Ten Media Relations: Big Ten Statement on Penn State Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) held its regularly scheduled meeting this week with several items on its Agenda, including the series of events recently unfolding at Penn State University. With regard to the Penn State matter, the Big Ten office issued the following statement on behalf of the COP/C: The Big Ten Presidents and Chancellors express their sincere concern for any harm done to innocent young victims and their families. Protection of our children is one of society’s most central responsibilities and institutions of higher education should be particularly vigilant. We are committed to examining our own institutions to assure that effective measures are taken to assure the safety of children on our campuses. It has been approximately one month since the initial release of the Grand Jury report in the Penn State matter and a number of federal, state and institutional investigations have been launched. While it is premature to reach any conclusions regarding civil or criminal liability arising out of these events, there does appear to be sufficient information to raise significant concerns as to whether a concentration of power in a single individual or program may have threatened or eroded institutional control of intercollegiate athletics at Penn State. …

Sweetness: Michigan Heads to Sugar Bowl
Just a few Sugar Bowl bullets in the aftermath of the selection show and the reaction over the past few days: > New Orleans. The site of one of the most heartbreaking moments as a Michigan fan. As a student in 1993, I saw it all play out about 15 rows behind the bench at a student and still remember the feeling after that game. Or maybe it was the hangover from being at Pat O’Brien’s until 4am Sunday morning after the Kentucky win. It’ll be my first time back and there will certainly be some memories. > BCS. So it’s nice, I suppose, to be selected to play in a BCS bowl, and being the main attraction on Jan 3rd is a nice benefit. We know why Michigan and Tech were selected. But beyond that, I don’t consider it a great feather in our collective fedora that Michigan was selected to a BCS bowl. To me, outside of the national championship game and the Rose Bowl, the only thing I want to see is a decent venue and more importantly, a quality opponent. I have a feeling that many M fans were so hung up on the concept of getting a BCS bowl bid and by-passing the Spartans in the pecking order that they would have settled for anyone…

Harmon of Michigan–on DVD? Indeed.
Tip of the hat to reader Jeff for this tip. You may have seen this movie poster around town or on this site or on eBay: Well, it actually is a real film from 1941 featuring Tom Harmon himself and even 1940 team captain Forest Evashevski. Summary: A football coach, riding high and feeling bulletproof, begins to have his life unravel after a series of his own arrogant blunders. He orders an illegal "flying wedge" formation in a game (which costs him his job) and ruins his marriage over more loutish behavior before coming to his senses. Harmon, the loutish brute. Now for the news–turns out a DVD version of Harmon of Michigan is being released next week and you can order it on Amazon. Looks like it’s a program where they will re-issue old films on demand (they’ll cut and ship the DVDs as folks order them). That’s good by me. Jeff added, “I doubt the film is particularly good, but it’ll be fun to watch Ol’ 98 portray himself.” Yes, I’m guessing this is just about the worst film ever made but it would be interesting to see 98 and Evashevski fumbling around trying to act. You can order it now for $20.95 on Amazon for its December 6 release. Like the movie poster? Pick it up on…

Stitch In Time Saves 53
If you recall, the ‘3’ on the front of Ryan Van Bergen’s jersey was torn at some point during the San Diego State game earlier this year: Check out Van Bergen’s jersey after the Ohio State game Saturday: Apparently instead of issuing RVB a new jersey (and I thought they had dozens of these things) they went with the repair. Was the repair requested by RVB either because he liked the fit of this jersey and/or he didn’t want to tempt fate after the fast start this season? Was it a nod to longtime equipment manager Henry Hatch used to personally sew the jersey numbers on the uniforms? A mandate from State Street as cost saving measure?

Overcome! Sights & Sounds [Michigan 40, Ohio State 34] 2011
In the chaos on the field after the game, I couldn’t help but get a little choked up and I wasn’t alone. What can you say about Saturday? You saw world-class athletic talent one minute and Pop Warner-esque blunders the next. You got to see some of the guys who endured the past three painful years shine, defeat the hated Buckeyes and win eight times this season in front of classmates, families, and fans. Every emotion you can think of in three and a half hours of play. As I watched the last few minutes play out I kept thinking that it almost had to be this way to finally overcome the Buckeyes. To the Sights & Sounds: What? Screaming “CHEAP PERFUME…!” isn’t cool anymore? * Related:
