• First Look: Black and Blue—Gerald Ford, Willis Ward and the 1934 Georgia Tech Game

This is something I’ve been pining for since at least 2009, here’s proof via this mgo-guest post: Willis Ward:  The African-American end and U-M track star was Gerald Ford’s roommate for road games and a member of the ’32 and ’33 national championship squads.  This man’s story deserves a full documentary or movie, not a blurb on a blog post, and it’s safe to assume he gave some interesting remarks to the banquet crowd… Blue and Blue is done and it will debut soon.  I even contributed to it in a small way (or a big way if you count circumference of head with respect to screen size).  I’ve seen the full length version and it is very well done—you can get a copy now (with free shipping for MVictors readers).  Another feather in the cap of Buddy and Brian at the Emmy-nominated Stunt3 Multimedia.   The film is done in the Ken Burns-style—they tell the story while jumping between the key players & flashing vintage photos, clippings, letters and where available, film footage.   You get a feel from the trailer:   More later, but a few quick highlights.  First, I loved the shots of the actual wires and letters between Georgia Tech and Michigan, along with a few of the letters from U-M fans to Kipke and Yost chiming in…

  • Michigan From The Heart–The Movie

Ok, not a movie, but  here’s a very well produced piece about one of my favorite programs, Michigan ‘From The Heart’.    From some background:  I got the pleasure to see the student athletes in action on a Thursday night up in the children’s floors of Mott Hospital (virtual double chest pound to Moundros, Omameh and Cronin—those guys are amazing).   I also golfed in their outing this summer out at the UM Golf Course – a great event. This is great cause to get behind.  Here’s more about what they do:   More here: Michigan From The Heart program (official site) From the Heart Outing Recap ‘Michigan From the Heart’ Radio (04-22 WTKA audio) Get gear:

  • The Difference – Michigan 36, Purdue 14

There’s a difference this year in the Wolverines and I think it has a lot to do with having a guy at the helm focusing on this (from pregame Saturday): And this, from August: Still, do you see a championship-caliber team out there?  I don’t.  But I like what I’m seeing.  Even in the State game you could tell we were tackling better and each week guys seem to know what they’re supposed to do and do it. There’s enough talk of Rich Rod given the release of Three and Out last week, so I’ll save the comparisons but needless to say I like where things are heading.  This team won’t be in Indy this year but they’ll be in that game soon enough. Speaking of who’s ending up in Indy–I love talking about the tie-breakers and I broke it down in detail here.  This divisional alignment presents the opportunity in certain circumstances for wild redemption.  Consider that freaking Iowa controls their Rose Bowl destiny. Between us, Michigan ain’t winning out but here you go with some scenarios for the Legends division: Nebraska remaining games: (Northwestern, at Penn State, at Michigan, Iowa) Michigan State: (Minnesota, @ Iowa, Indiana, @ Northwestern) Michigan: (@ Iowa, @ Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio State) Nebraska controls their destiny – win out and Huskers go to Indy. …

  • Visiting Hours: Schembechler Hall Museum

[Update: Call ahead due to COVID restrictions] Want a rapid virtual tour of the Schembechler Hall Towsley Family Museum? Check it out here from 2020: Because the media huddles inside the museum inside Schembechler Hall (officially the Margaret Dow Towsley Sports Museum), I’ve been able to check out the displays quite a few times.  I was never clear on whether it was open to the public.  As far as I understand it, it was open many years ago, then closed for a spell for whatever reason. The hours are Monday-Thursday 9-12 and 1-4, and Friday 9-1.  It’s worth a look and if you haven’t been there in a while they’ve added some new displays. Reader Corey recently visited and took some great shots, you can view them all here.  A few favorities: Again, you can see all of them here. Follow MVictors on Twitter  !

  • TWIMFbH–Kipke, Crisler and The Dickinson System (1932!)

For the latest edition of TWIMFbH we step down to 1932 and check out when Harry Kipke’s undefeated crew, led by All-American quarterback Harry Newman faced a very familiar name—Fritz Crisler and his Princeton Tigers. We touch on that game played this Saturday back in 1932, but spend more time on the method to determine the national champion back then, namely, The Dickinson System. As always, you can listen to it out before the KeyBank Countdown to Kick-off on WTKA 1050AM tomorrow, or click play now: [display_podcast] You can hear all of the  This Week… clips here.   Follow MVictors on Twitter More on the Dickinson System here: See Dick Compute: How an Econ Prof determined the National Champion

  • Needles, Bones, Stitches, Cigars and Pistols (Red Berenson audio)

subtitle: Why I love the Red Berenson show. Here’s a mere couple minutes from the opening segment of the WTKA 1050AM broadcast of last week’s show. Red talks about the bones he’s broken during his career, then tells a story from the late 1960s when he was sewn up by a poker-playing, cigar-smoking, pistol-wielding doctor.  Awesome: [display_podcast] Check out all of the WTKA Podcasts here Follow MVictors on Twitter
