• His Own Little Brown Jug (v2)

Reader Mark Foster recently ventured where only eagles dare: he set out to create a replica Little Brown Jug for his M-Mancave and inevitably to show off at tailgates and make women swoon, etc., etc. He pinged me first with a questions about certain details and I shot him some of the photos I’ve collected from the jug research.  Next, I pointed him to Eric Mierzwiak who, if you recall, in 2009 went on a similar quest and created a beauty of jug and had some great pointers on how to prime and paint the crock. Here’s a look at Mierzwiak’s masterpiece: Foster was find enough to send me the chronological blow-by-blow of the project, enjoy:

  • 2011 Spring Game Wrap (Photos, Etc.)

“STEAKS!”  Je’Ron Stokes for the game winner. Positives: The Alumni game was fantastic and it’s clear from the former players that they were treated very well during the weekend. It was very nice seeing Mike Martin come off the edge and move around on defense.  As Mattison said postgame he’s been constantly double-teamed at nose guard so it was good seeing the defense trying to create mismatches. Craig Roh looked much bigger; Taylor Lewan’s cast is off. Defense seemed to tackle well. Brady Hoke wore short pants. Gardner threw one ball 60+ yards in the air on the run. (To no one, but it looked cool). It was nice to see a ball tossed TE Koger’s way; it looked like a waggle #Griese The game raised over $350,000 for Mott Hospital. Struggles: Denard struggled.  Larry Lage had him passing: 5-14 for 70 yards, 6 rushes for 60 yards.  There were certainly a couple drops mixed in there.  My take: he made a big leap from year one to two, and everyone (including 16) seemed to think that was due to his comfort-level with the offense.  So, let’s hope he gets comfortable this summer. Gardner didn’t fare much better despite throwing it 60 yards on the run. There doesn’t seem to be a clear choice at running back.  Mike Cox…

  • Alumni Game – Recap, Photos (Blue 38, Maize 30)

Hail the Blue team, prevailing 38-30 in a fast-paced, down-to-the-wire game.   Captain Jim Conley and his crew had better quarterback play and MVP Alijah Bradley who made several fine catches and runs. In true Michigan form, the game was rife with controversy, from questionable TD calls (players crossing the line without their flags?) and a suddenly frozen clock at the end (Spartan Bob?):   A few photos: Jim Conley with QB Spencer Brinton and #7 can still toss it   Wow – Jansen cleans up nice.  Getting ready for the BTN broadcast  Ira and Steve in radio booth   “He was down!”  Much controversy as usual.   Touchdown Big turnout for the alumni game .        The MVP trophy – (?) – I hope my man Bradley drives a semi or a Hearse New scoreboards pending   Captain Conley – he ALWAYS starts (and did again today)

  • Michigan Spring Game 2011: Here’s (Almost) Everything

Almost everything below.  What they missed: Hoke confirmed, they will keep score of the game and the winners will get a steak dinner, the losers hotdogs and beans.  (Either scenario sounds pretty good to me).  We don’t have the full roster for the alumni game but I did confirm that ‘64 team captain Jim Conley (with Zoltan at last year’s game above) will be out there Saturday and as Conley told me, “I always start.”  As he should—expect Capt. Conley out there for a few snaps. Here’s the rest from U-M Media Relations: Everything You Need to Know about the 2011 U-M Spring Football Game Presented by PNC Bank ANN ARBOR – The 2011 Mott Spring Game presented by PNC Bank featuring the University of Michigan football team and its alumni is less than three days away and the program hopes to exceed the estimated crowd of 50,000 fans that watched last year’s final practice at Michigan Stadium. The spring game is free to the public, but the football team and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital have partnered in a fund raiser for the new hospital scheduled to open in Fall 2012. The gates to Michigan Stadium will open at 9 a.m. EDT. The third annual alumni flag football game begins with introductions at 10 a.m. The 132nd team in school…

  • Crisler Arena Clock (2011)

A big thanks to Noel for passing this along.  You’ve certainly heard about the new scoreboards going up next season at Crisler, Yost, and inside Michigan Stadium.   Well, U-M is apparently unloading some of the old visual equipment on eBay, at least this beauty along with a back-up that looks just like it:   You could find this one at center court opposite the benches for years including last season.  It comes affixed to a table:   So what would you do with something like this?  Trick out your man cave?  Roll it out for pick-up games at your house?  Mount it upside down and layout the most epic spelling of digital “BOOBS” ever?
