The 76th annual Mud Bowl was held outside the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at the corner of South University and Washtenaw Saturday. SAE defeated Phi Kappa Psi 36-16, never really looking back after scoring the first three touchdowns of the game. It was the 11th straight win for the host squad. Tri-Delts and Alpha Phi sororities squared off at half time and I think the fans were the real winners in that battle. I’ve got some video I’ll post later. The event raised around $15,000 for University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital and the Make a Wish Foundation. Update: And how about a few clips from the big day, you might like this if you’re one of those freaks who enjoys girls, mud and wrestling.

ILL – Juice Rolls up Blue
That game was so disappointing for obvious reasons. The Ann Arbor News used the terms bone-headed and bewildered to describe the Michigan defense’s struggles on Saturday and it fits. Juice Williams gave one of the best performances we’ve seen, up there with the Vince Young, Dennis Dixon and Donovan McNabb beat downs. If you didn’t know coming into 2008 that there’d be ups and downs, you learned it during the Utah game and it’s been that way throughout. Michigan ended the Wisconsin game on the highest high and when ball popped from Odoms’ hands on the kick-off right into the hands the orange, they hit a new low. A few take aways for me from this game: * Many of our fans are annoying as hell. Proper conduct at games is a frequent topic over the past few seasons as folks have debated booing, whether and when to stand or sit during games, key plays, etc. I think there’s another behavior that’s worthy of critique. I usually wear headphones to the game not only to look cool and listen to the broadcast, but to also block out the commentary and critiques by the people around me. I’m not saying people can’t talk or even shout how they are feeling but it’s over the top. How many times are you stuck…

Michael Taylor is giddy – The Mandarich Calls (WTKA audio)
Thankfully WTKA posted the audio of recent calls from former Michigan quarterback Michael Taylor who was mildly excited that former Spartan tackle Tony Mandarich is revealing the details of his steroid use. I’ve posted them below. For those of you with nazi IT departments, here’s most of the calls transcribed: Here’s most of Taylor’s call on 10-1 “I told you that clown was on steroids and their championship was tainted, that those clowns have not won anything since Bubba Smith and I told you guys that several years ago. You don’t go from 1986 and playing left tackle and giving up 5 sacks, to the next year picking the guy up and carrying him 10 yards down the field. The same guy who embarrassed you the year before is going to embarrass the same the next year. You may end up having a stalemate, but you’re not going to end up physically dominating a guy like that. And so therefore all you State fans, all you Michigan Agricultural College clowns, I told you your championship was tainted and so therefore you reap what you sow, so therefore when’s the last time you guys won a championship? Sixty years ago. Thank you.” And today 10/2, here’s Taylor coming back on: “Michigan Agricultural College clowns haven’t won anything. 1988 and 1989 were…

Yost Busts the Galloping Ghost
In 1924, Red Grange had one of the most famous games in college football history against Michigan. Did you know that U-M actually got its revenge on the Ghost the following season? With the Illini coming into town we’ll take a look back to October 24, 1925, the year after Red Grange put a whooping on Michigan at the dedication of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium. Grange tallied 6 touchdowns in that game, five rushing and one passing, including four in the first 12 minutes on runs of 95, 67, 56, and 44 yards. For obvious reasons that game is still talked about today. What isn’t talked about so much is what happened the next year. Someone up in the stands didn’t take kindly to the humiliation of 1924 and was set on doing something about it. From Bruce Madej’s Champions of the West: Just one year before, Coach George Little’s Wolverines had been humiliated by the Illini and their junior halfback, Harold “Red” Grange. So embarrassed was U-M athletic director Fielding Yost by Michigan’s performance that day, he decided to abandon his seat in the stands and return as head coach. For 12 months, Yost schemed how to bridle Illinois’ Galloping Ghost. He replaced Michigan’s unsuccessful six-man line of 1924 with a seven-man front and a diamond-shaped secondary. Legendary Illini coach…

The Debut of Crisler’s Winged Helmet
The day was October 1, 1938, as new Michigan coach Herbert 'Fritz' Crisler made his debut as the head man for the Wolverines. That day at Michigan stadium Crisler also unveiled the maize and blue version of the famed winged helmet.
