• Michael Taylor is giddy – The Mandarich Calls (WTKA audio)

Thankfully WTKA posted the audio of recent calls from former Michigan quarterback Michael Taylor who was mildly excited that former Spartan tackle Tony Mandarich is revealing the details of his steroid use. I’ve posted them below. For those of you with nazi IT departments, here’s most of the calls transcribed: Here’s most of Taylor’s call on 10-1 “I told you that clown was on steroids and their championship was tainted, that those clowns have not won anything since Bubba Smith and I told you guys that several years ago. You don’t go from 1986 and playing left tackle and giving up 5 sacks, to the next year picking the guy up and carrying him 10 yards down the field. The same guy who embarrassed you the year before is going to embarrass the same the next year. You may end up having a stalemate, but you’re not going to end up physically dominating a guy like that. And so therefore all you State fans, all you Michigan Agricultural College clowns, I told you your championship was tainted and so therefore you reap what you sow, so therefore when’s the last time you guys won a championship? Sixty years ago. Thank you.” And today 10/2, here’s Taylor coming back on: “Michigan Agricultural College clowns haven’t won anything. 1988 and 1989 were…

  • Yost Busts the Galloping Ghost

In 1924, Red Grange had one of the most famous games in college football history against Michigan.   Did you know that U-M actually got its revenge on the Ghost the following season? With the Illini coming into town we’ll take a look back to October 24, 1925, the year after Red Grange put a whooping on Michigan at the dedication of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium. Grange tallied 6 touchdowns in that game, five rushing and one passing, including four in the first 12 minutes on runs of 95, 67, 56, and 44 yards. For obvious reasons that game is still talked about today. What isn’t talked about so much is what happened the next year. Someone up in the stands didn’t take kindly to the humiliation of 1924 and was set on doing something about it. From Bruce Madej’s Champions of the West: Just one year before, Coach George Little’s Wolverines had been humiliated by the Illini and their junior halfback, Harold “Red” Grange. So embarrassed was U-M athletic director Fielding Yost by Michigan’s performance that day, he decided to abandon his seat in the stands and return as head coach. For 12 months, Yost schemed how to bridle Illinois’ Galloping Ghost. He replaced Michigan’s unsuccessful six-man line of 1924 with a seven-man front and a diamond-shaped secondary. Legendary Illini coach…

  • Power Index: Week 5

The start of conference play is behind us and there’s some shuffling in the index. Penn State after its impressive win over Illinois is now nipping at Ohio State’s heels – just a fraction of an index point away. Wisconsin’s loss dropped them but there’s still a lot of confidence in that team, and despite Michigan’s effort it looks like the pollsters a still a tad skeptical (I am). They jumped up in the ranking but a mere 4.5 index points. Northwestern meanwhile has moved into that third tier of teams and heading up. The Spartans? Slowly and steadily creeping up. Great stuff, here’s the latest index: The best part of the Index, comments from those polled: Gilliam, the bitter Badger: I hate football. John Belushi, first SNL skit: “We are all out of Badgers…Let’s boil the Wolverines.” Biggie, the mildly pleased Spartan “Great weekend…..UM turned what could have been a second consecutive ugly loss into a great win (thanks in large part to a very good defense)….they live to play another day. UW now has a must win at home next week vs. Ohio State.” “Terrelle Pryor looked good for OSU. This cat is going to wreak havoc on the Big 10. PSU is the class of the league at this point. Northwestern is 5-0….seems like a bloated record…

  • Carty on WTKA (audio), Rittenberg highlights

Jim Carty with his regular call in to WTKA 1050am, talking about what was going on in online [“lynch mob”] during his MLive blog midway through the game on Saturday: [display_podcast] Elsewhere: * Adam Rittenberg notes that the Toledo kick-off will be at noon. * Speaking of reaction midway through the game, read A-Ritts’ blog post at halftime of the Wisconsin game. Pretty funny. I wonder what was on the other laptops in the press box at Michigan Stadium? A few slices: I just walked by several “Old Blues” in the press box who are saying this is the worst they’ve ever seen Michigan play at the Big House, and it’s the 500th game. Can Michael Phelps start taking snaps for Michigan? And it’s not like the Wolverines are doing anything when they keep the ball. Michigan finished the half with 21 total yards and minus-7 passing yards. Can you say Notre Dame of 2007? Barring a dramatic turnaround after halftime, Michigan will find itself at the bottom of the Big Ten power rankings on Monday. All-American tight end Travis Beckum remains on the sideline, his helmet now no longer on his head. The Badgers don’t need Beckum the way they’re dominating this game. Save him for Ohio State next week. This one looks like it’s over.
