• Webb v. Carty on WTKA (audio)

News Columnist Jim Carty once again dialed up WTKA this morning in his usual slot. You can hear the full segment here. Here’s a four minute exchange where host Sam Webb grills Carty over the April Michigan Daily article in which some of the athletes quoted in the academics & athletics scandal claim they were misled by the News columnists: [display_podcast] Webb doesn’t really get anywhere but it’s interesting to hear Webb heat up over it. In the end, Webb pushes on Carty to release tapes of the interviews but per Carty, it’s not going to happen and that was really not his call. Related: Speaking of Webb, he’s really been doing a nice job on the morning show. While there’s certainly a Michigan bias in the voting, he’s right up there in my poll (on the right sidebar) asking to name the top local sports show. The top 4 have been tight for a while so I’m going to leave it up for a couple more days.

  • Brian Williams Teases You

Apparently, NBC News anchor Brian Williams took aim at this town and your Wolverines during his commencement address to graduating Buckeyes last week. One Ann Arborite wasn’t happy about it and his letter was published in the Sunday News: Memo to Karl: While your passionate defense of our team and city is admirable, I think you need to lighten up on Williams. Switch things around and you’d be laughing away at the Buckeye jokes. You can view a video of the address here, the speech is lackluster as were the jokes aimed at Michigan. Williams said the Ann Arbor jabs were supplied by Tom Brokaw and another friend in the business. I wouldn’t have taken credit for the jokes either. So he gets a pass on that one. If you want to take shots at Williams I’d start with:* His comments about bloggers whom he feels are “on an equal footing with someone in a bathroom with a modem.” Is that bad? Maybe Cook and company will add Williams to their no-holds-barred quiz bowl challenge.* His George Hamiltonesque penchant for tanning, including the bizarre white raccoon-like goggle lines around his peepers: * His profession. Does anyone watch network news anymore?:

  • Hicks Hangs on, will play Weekend

After leading the US Open on day one, things didn’t go quite as smooth for former U-M golfer Justin Hicks as he shot 80. He put up 9 bogies and a double, but the two birdies along with the merits of his day one 68 allowed Hicks to hold his locker for the weekend – but just barely. Heading into Saturday he’s +6 with a cut line of +7. I’m sure he’s disappointed with Friday’s score but pleased that he’s playing the weekend. This had to be his top goal for this tournament and maybe just beyond….I found his website and Hicks is certified PGA instructor. You can sign up online for appointments and heading into this week Hicks figured he’d had an open slot Sunday morning: Needless to say that slot is taken but I’m guessing any students he had scheduled will understand. No matter what happens now, Hicks will get a nice paycheck, some free advertising and maybe more.

  • Football team Takes Over, Raise big bucks for Mott (audio)

Today marked the next installment of Michigan football radio takeover on WTKA 1050AM and several other Michigan-based stations. The 12-hour radio-a-thon raised nearly $90,000 for the new C.S. Mott Children’s hospital as they were going off the air. Most of the current coaching staff was in studio with a bunch of current players, and several former M men in the NFL dialed in including Steve Hutchinson, Jeff Backus and Jake Long. Rodriguez was in studio from around 5pm to the end of the auction at 7pm and did a great job. Here’s a great segment during drive time hosted by Bill ‘Huge’ Simonson, with Coach Rodriguez, Mike Hart and Morgan Trent: [display_podcast] I’m sure they will still take your donations! Support C.S. Mott

  • Topps Interviews Long

As part of their photo shoot, Topps the sports card company conducted an interview with Jake Long. The big man admitted that he collected cards as a kid and as a Lions fan collected Barry Sanders, Herman Moore and Chris Spielman cards. He still has some. I don’t know what kind of budget Parcells and company have in Miami but Long’s shoulder pads look more like elbow pads. The guy doing the interview is a bit of a putz, but it is funny when he whips out Long’s official card and shows it to him:

  • No Love for Meddling Webmaster

The seller of the 1986 Rose Bowl ring considered my research and the exposure of the alleged name of the original owner to be low brow. Here’s all the posts on this topic for context: #1 eBay Watch: Oh Man, 1986 Rose Bowl Ring #2 Is this Garland Rivers’ Rose Bowl ring? #3 Ring Saga Update Eddie Libman, a.k.a. eBay’s “Buckhead_Bennie”, dropped this on me today: I am writing to comment on your recently posted article concerning the 1986 Michigan Big Ten Championship Rose Bowl ring which was listed on ebay and sold June 9, 2008 The original article which drew attention to our auction seemed to serve a purpose and I was amused by the commentary referring to the seller as “a true beauty himself” which would refer to me. The following update to the first article and posted to your web site after the auction ended unfortunately came across as slightly misguided despite what most likely were good intentions behind it. The article correctly stated that our auction was canceled then re listed with (relevant) information that was inadvertently omitted from the original listing information such as the gold weight, and size of the ring along with additional posted images of the ring taken from various angles. We also provided a very small amount of personal information about…
