Here’s audio on Sporting News radio breaking the story, and a few comments from Angelique Chengelis saying it’s a desperate move by Coleman and Martin on WDFN’s Stoney and Wojo: [display_podcast] Quick takes, if true – Ann Arbor News columnist Jim Carty will no doubt be digging into this if he’s hired. He’s got a Big East background and he’s hinted at this on WTKA, and if there is any impropriety in his past Carty will be checking it out. – Bizarre that we are clearing out West Virginia of coaches. – Most fans will be very happy. – It’s funny that Mary Sue Coleman is the closer. – UPDATE: You’ve gotta love the college football fan. Much of the talk on the radio is already on what Rodriguez would do with Mallett. Gotta love it {democracy:37} Here’s the profile and a few takes on Rodriguez from the Death March Madness bracket: Rich Rodriguez has his West Virginia team poised to play for the national title in January this year. • Cold War II in 2008

The Free Press is reporting today the Red Berenson and MSU coach Rick Comley are in talks to hold a game at Ford Field next December. That’s great, but wasn’t the whole novelty of the Cold War was that it was played outside? Michigan and Michigan State play several times each year and sometimes on neutral sites (GLI). Branding it another Cold War diminishes the efforts of the people in 2001 that tailgated, got their drink on and attended that game.

  • The Foundation is Deep

Hundreds of former Michigan football letterman took the field prior to the Michigan-Ohio State game a few weeks ago, Among those men were a few names you know: Rick Leach, Jon Jansen, Brian Griese. The majority of the mass that formed the lane from the tunnel to the sideline was made up of folks that you may not know. These men form a rock solid foundation of former Michigan letter-winners that will not fade, even during lower points in Michigan history such as the 2007 season and this whole coaching search mess. These guys all have stories to tell but you won’t hear them on WTKA before the games or read books about their experiences in Michigan stadium. One of those letter winners on that field was Dr. Barry Dehlin who earned three letters under Bump Elliott in the 1960s. I found him on the sideline prior to the game chatting it up with old teammates (he’s third from the left in the photo above in the maize M hat). He practices medicine today in mid-Michigan. For every Rick Leach there were dozens of Dehlins on that sideline. While most of these former players don’t have space dedicated to them inside Schembechler Hall, you can bet they penned many of the letters to Bill Martin voicing their concern on the…

  • Free Press: Miles spoke with Martin, Coleman Friday

Mark Snyder just reported on Freep.com that Mary Sue Coleman and Bill Martin did indeed speak with Les Miles last week. He doesn’t cite any direct sources. Two quotes from the article of interest: Miles had a phone conversation Friday morning with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and school president Mary Sue Coleman, according to several people with knowledge of the call. …. While the call between the two sides did not identify Miles as the leading candidate for the coaching vacancy, it did give them a chance to interact formally for the first time and to discuss a number of issues previously handled through intermediaries. He did get one slightly interesting quote from one of Coleman’s people: “We’re not going to be discussing anything about recruiting (a new coach) until after the announcement is made,” Coleman’s spokesperson, Kelly Cunningham, said today. While we didn’t see what the question or comment was that prompted this comment from Cunningham, what does she mean by “the announcement”? What announcement? The phrasing is peculiar here because it’s not like anyone is aware of any type of pending decision in this process, thus, an announcement. If this is true, apparently Martin and Coleman didn’t have the LSU AD’s blessing who said today: “I’d be under the assumption that the permission to speak to Les…

  • Factoid: Recent History with Heisman Winners

With Tim Tebow winning this year’s Heisman, it’ll mark the fourth straight winner of the top college prize will have played against the Wolverines at some point in their career. And over the past 14 seasons, eight of the winners have played either with (Woodson) or against Michigan, most of them in the same season. Here’s the breakdown: During this span Michigan is 2-2 against the team fielding the Heisman winner of that season. The Wolverines defeated Eddie George’s Buckeyes and Ron Dayne’s Badgers and lost on ‘The Catch’ to Rashaan Salaam’s Buffs and of course last year to Troy Smith. The rubber match will be at the Capital One bowl this year.

  • Appalachian State Face Familiar looking Foe

Despite losing a couple of times this season those App State Mountaineers have found their way into the FCS Championship where they’ll face the Delaware Blue Hens. Two quick takes: Winged Hens. When they step on the field against the Blue Hens they’ll certainly get a dose of deja vu. While the setting for the game won’t quite be the same, the opponent looks like some team you know. Yes, it’s that other team that dons Crisler’s creation. Turns out it wasn’t over. Just after Michigan lost that brutal game to the Mountaineers, the common thinking was that this awful loss knocked Michigan out of national championship contention. We learned quickly that that loss was not a fluke as the whole 2007 season was a struggle, but that loss did not knock Michigan out. Had the Wolverines won the next 11 games they’d be a lock for the BCS Championship. You could even argue that they’d have an outside shot at the title game had they simply won every game after the Oregon loss. Good luck to the Mountaineers, whose fans were unbelievably cool before and after the game. Here’s to you Shaggy:
