Once a year I ask readers directly for support – and year after year you’ve responded. Together we’ve raised over $13,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JRDF). On Saturday August 1 I’ll be back in East Lansing to go face-to-face with the Spartans to take part in the Walk for a Cure. In 2011 those who chipped in got their name on the righteous JDRF Jug, in 2012 on the coveted JDRF banner, in 2013 they righted a horrible wrong last year a coveted JDRF helmet decal. This year you’ll get a hearty tweet with an epic U-M (or team of your choice) photo from yesteryear in your honor. Here’s how to get in the action: Donate to my walk group – something, anything. Join me in East Lansing for the walk on Saturday August 1st. Learn about JDRF and Type 1 diabetes—you probably have some friends/relatives/co-workers that are affected. All of the above FAQ: Why East Lansing? A: My family help create the EL Walk years ago, so what’s a brother to do? Why are you involved in T1D? A: Found out about the disease when my nephew Jack was diagnosed when he was 3 and I’m trying to help. Isn’t “curing” T1D just about diet and exercise? A: No! Its onset has nothing to do with diet…

Rich Hewlett and the Swing to Cure Diabetes – May 20, 2013 (audio)
One of my favorite off-season events is upon us – the 5th Annual Swing to Cure Diabetes hosted by former Michigan QB/DB Rich Hewlett is coming up May 20th. Here’s Hewlett talking about the event and much more with Sam and Ira this week: [display_podcast] I’ll be out there with bells on at the U-M Golf Course, as will Ira from WTKA along with Coach Hoke (left, with Hewlett’s son Jeffrey), Mike Hart and typically a bunch of other former coaches/players. And…Coach Hoke may actually swing the club this year which will be sight for sure. All the details are here. This is an outstanding event and a wonderful cause. Consider joining us or donating one way or another. Check back in here for photos, jokes and more. Swing to Cure Diabetes Event (Recap, Photos)
Hewlett welcoming everyone to the event An excellent event put on by former Michigan QB Rich Hewlett as today he held his 2nd ‘Swing to Cure Diabetes’ event benefitting the U-M Comprehensive Diabetes Center and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Coach Lloyd Carr and Cathy Schembechler were the honorary co-chairs once again. Joining Carr and Schembechler amongst the golfing groups were coach Jerry Hanlon, broadcaster Jim Brandstatter, former NFL coordinator Sherman Lewis, and several of Hewlett’s former U-M teammates. A couple years ago Mrs. Schembechler donated a football that sat in Bo’s TV room signed by Bo and Don Canham for the silent auction. This year she brought something quite unique – a handwritten set of talking points (on a manila file folder) that Bo would use during public speaking events. It sold for nearly $1,000 and I was able to get a shot of it from the winner, here’s just a clip: Coach Carr made it around the course to meet and take pics with most of the golfing groups but not mine :( . A couple more photos from the day: Coach Hanlon donning his “We Stayed” lid Brandy with Cathy Schembechler before we teed off My favorite hole on the course

Many dignitaries were in attendance including honorary chair Kathy Schembechler along with coach Carr: These are great causes and it’s a wonderful event. It’s a great chance to play the U-M course and meet some cool folks and help fight this awful disease. I’ll be out there and hope to see you too. For more info, to join the outing or to donate or sponsor, check out their website: swingtocurediabetes.com. ————————————————————————————- As for Hewlett, his claim to fame while donning the winged helmet will always be getting the start as a freshman against Art Schlichter and the Buckeyes in…
