I was back on Spartan Nation radio with host Hondo Carpenter this week talking Hardcore Pawn, Michigan Hoops, NCAA tourney expectations for the Wolverines and the Big Ten, and whether I’d be rooting for the Buckeyes in the tournament*. Dig it: [display_podcast] * No.

Jalen Joins Shep to discuss the Fab Five (03-03 WDFN audio)
Jalen Rose joined Michigan hoops radio voice and WDFN morning show host Matt Shepard on Shep, Shave, and Shower on 1130AM this morning: [display_podcast] They talked quite a bit about the legacy and potential reinstatement of the Fab 5. Jalen clearly thinks the F4 banners need to be restored and feels a jersey or two should be retired. ESPN has an extensive documentary on the controversial quintet coming up on March 13 at 9am. You can preview some of the clips here HT to Jeff Papworth. One historical nitpick: Jalen says a key piece in restoring the Fab Five back to Michigan will be restoring their Final 4 banners. He adds that the Fab 5 had were the team “that helped Michigan get to two of its three final appearances ever.” Of course Michigan was also in the 1965 and 1976 NCAA finals, losing to UCLA and undefeated Indiana respectively. You can catch all of the WDFN podcasts here.

Happy Days Are Here Again (Radio, Print, Mag)
A dash of MVictors-elsewhere: 1. Radio: Last night I spent a few minutes discussing the wonderful victory over the Spartans at Breslin with Hondo Carpenter of Spartan Nation on SN Radio. If you missed it, here’s the audio: [display_podcast] 2. Observer: Check me out ‘Up Front’ in the current Ann Arbor Observer. I wrote the short piece on the frat booze raids of 1931. You might recall this eBay Watch feature from December that has much more on the police action that nabbed football captain James Simrall. 3. GoBlueWolverine Mag: In the current issue I talk a little on the early days of Michigan hockey–much of it extracted from John U. Bacon’s wonderful Blue Ice. In the next issue check out a little more depth on those Michigan clans! Unite the Clans!

Tom Izzo joins Jim Rome (6-17 audio)
The interview starts off a bit slow but Rome gets into the LeBron questions and Izzo’s future near the end. Izzo normally has a raspy voice but he definitely sounded worn down – no wonder. Of note: It might be a Dumb-and-Dumberesque chance, but when asked, Izzo did leave the door cracked for another look at the NBA. Izzo dropped a U.P. reference in there, which has got to leave JR scratching his head, no? Izzo revealed a big driver to his looks at the NBA is to challenge the notion that college coaches can’t make it in the NBA. His pulse picked up a bit during that discussion. Rome didn’t go into the media/coverage subplot here and I was a little surprised he missed that. In 11 minutes he had room to hit that and usually JR is very in tune with what’s being discussed locally. I was hopeful Izzo would make mention of, “Those nerds on The Red Cedar.” No go. Dufek’s Homer – The Call (audio)
Love this photo – mgoblue.com Certainly by now you’ve heard of Michigan’s epic comeback from down 14 runs to Northwestern this weekend on Senior Day. The story made it to SportsCenter and prompted ESPN to ask, ‘Are you Serious?’ WTKA’s Ira Weintraub called the game on the radio and was kind enough to forward over a clip of his call the Dufek’s bomb. Per Ira, “Not a great call, but not bad for a guy who has now called 8 baseball games in the last 10 years!!” Not to bad indeed, and note Weintraub using the Harwell technique of letting the crowd and band paint the scene after the blast: [display_podcast] . For more, check out frequent mgoblog diarist FormerlyAnonymous who gave his account of the game. (HT: Ace @ TWB) And speaking of WKTA 1050AM, Rich Maloney’s call into Sam and Ira this morning is worth a listen. Maloney effectively acknowledged the was over at 13-0, telling his players that no team of his has ever quit during a game, and it wouldn’t be happening today. That said, he did tell the guys that the wind was blowing out and their pitching was a bit depleted. Who knew? Unfortunately I don’t see the podcast up there yet; it is comes up I’ll toss up a link.

Jamie Morris on Columbus Radio on Rodriguez, Harbaugh (audio)
So I went over to the Columbus’ 97.1 The Fan website to find the audio of Rich Rodriguez’s call today, and stumbled on this. Jamie Morris, Michigan football legend, WTKA Sunday radio host and most importantly an official within the U-M athletic department spoke to the Columbus host (Bruce Hooley…Chris Spielman was away) about the upcoming Ohio State game, but also answered a few questions about Rodriguez and Jim Harbaugh. My frustration with Morris on WTKA is that he’s been such a company man towing the company line on WTKA, that it’s prevented him from offering actual opinions. But give this is listen as Morris gets candid. I don’t know if this is just Jamie measuring his words, but he didn’t exactly serve up a wild endorsement of Rodriguez and admitted that Harbaugh would be welcomed back to U-M if he were the Michigan football coach at some point beyond RR’s tenure. It’s not so much what he said, but that Morris never says anything remotely beyond the company line. Give this a listen, it gets interesting about 3 minutes in: [display_podcast] . Notes/Quotes: For starters, he referred to Harbaugh as “Jimmy” instead of “traitor”. Hooley asked for a general sense of the radio caller support for Rodriguez. Morris: “I think we’re at a 50/50 split now…” When asked about…
