• Talking Team One, Game One (WTKA audio)

As always it was pleasure to check into the WTKA 1050AM studio this morning to chat with Ira and Sam.  Today we discussed a little bit about the birthday of “Team 1”, the squad defeated Racine College 1-0 at White Stockings Park in Chicago on this day back in 1879. [display_podcast] And a bit of news out of this morning:  Yes indeed I will return in 2013 for my 4th year doing ‘This Week in Michigan Football History’ aka #TWIMFbH as part of the WTKA football pregame show…and I can’t wait.   Why Fraser’s Pub isn’t sponsoring this I’m uncertain. • Coach Beilein joins WTKA (Mar-22 audio)

A great interview with John Beilein on WTKA 1050AM this morning in the aftermath of the Duke game and of course the season.  He breaks down in detail a few situations in the final minutes of the game and of course talks to the future and how he thinks these guys will respond.  Enjoy: [display_podcast] As always – check out all of the WTKA podcasts here!

  • Dave Brandon joins WTKA and WDFN (audio 1-14)

AD Dave Brandon joined Sam and Ira this morning on WTKA.  You can hear this and all the WTKA podcasts here. [Update, Brandon later joined 1130AM WDFN – second clip added:] [display_podcast]   Funny, Brandon mentions in the second clip (WDFN interview) that he was impressed on how Hoke handled his appearance on Letterman:

  • Dave Brandon joins WTKA (12-01 audio)

Great get by Ira Weintraub and Sam Webb on WTKA 1050am.  Here’s their interview with AD David Brandon from this morning, helping promote the Adopt-A-Family program: [display_podcast] _ All of the WTKA podcasts are found here. While he spoke about the AAF program primarily, they did ask Brandon about the timeline for the coaching decision (about 6 minutes in).   Update:  Brandon’s response transcribed by BKFinest of mgoblog: "I have to look at the big picture thats what I do and approach things and the big picture is most important. Everything you do impacts recruiting…there’s all this firestorm about speculation and all that. What i try to be is infinitely consistent, we have our banquet tomorrow night, we have a bowl game to play, 15 practices to prepare for an undoubtedly a really fine opponent..the players and coaches have earned that right, get that experience behind them hopefully in a positive way. So all the firestorm that’s trying to move timetable is not going to work."

  • Sam Webb ruins Valenti, Foster (audio)

On August 11, 97.1FM afternoon hosts Mike Valenti and Terry Foster reacted to a caller who called them “irresponsible” for their reporting of the JT Turner departure, and evoked the name of Sam Webb of WTKA and GoBlueWolverine.   A few things happened. First, Valenti ripped Webb’s credibility on matters of Michigan, calling him “shill” for the program, and criticized Sam for framing 2-star M recruits as “the next Walter Payton.”  Valenti then ran down a list of players who he said bailed on Rich Rod and the program (I don’t think he mentioned where he got the list).    Fast forward to the following day when a caller into WTKA tells Sam about the comments about him on 97.1.   Sam’s reaction is one for the books, taking a swipe at Valenti but saving the best for his Detroit News colleague Foster, and longtime update man Dery.  Audio: Greg Dooley · Sam Webb – Valenti Foster Blasts of note from Webb: On Valenti: called him “the Sparty Gilbert Gottfried” and a “hack” and “a blowhard”. “Tell him to quit sitting around, with Terry Foster bouncing in his lap, and go do some real work.” “He can’t give you anything credible about Michigan..” On Foster: “And Terry Foster?  You’ve got to be joking.  The dude is a walking minstrel show.  Stepin Fetchit, that’s…

  • Tea Leaves into Divisional alignment (Dave Brandon audio 08-20)

WTKA broadcast live from Schembechler Hall this morning and Sam and Ira did a solid segment with AD Dave Brandon.  Topics ranged of course, but Brandon also addressed some tough questions about divisional realignment, particularly where Ohio and Michigan might fall. You can hear these and all the WKTA podcasts here, or click below, in two parts.  He gets into the division realignment questions in the second part: [display_podcast] Notes: A few key quotes on divisional realignment. When asked if he were making the decision, would he put Michigan and Ohio State in the same conference division?  Brandon paused then answered. "No." Sam asked, "Why?"  Brandon:  "Because we’re in a situation where one of the best things that could happen, in my opinion in a given season, would be the opportunity to play Ohio State twice.  Once in the regular season and once for the championship of the Big Ten. Sam asked about whether they would hold the tradition to keep that the last game of the season.   Brandon:  "I think there’s a distinct possibility that that game will be a later game in the season, but not necessarily the last game of the season.  And that’s simply because…I don’t think the coaches, or the players, or the fans, or the networks or anyone, would appreciate that match-up to…

  • WTKA Moves Huge Show to 6-8pm slot, on delay

For those who listen to 1050AM WTKA may have noticed that the Dan Patrick Show has run the last couple days in the slot that used to be occupied by Michigan radio host Bill ‘Huge’ Simonson. WTKA has moved the Huge show out of the drive time slot and onto a 6-8pm window and on delay. I called the station to ask about the decision. Sounds like it came down to a ratings and perhaps a few complaints from listeners. While Huge is technically a local show, the frequent focus on Central Michigan athletics I think wore thin on some Ann Arborites. So they’re moving Dan Patrick into the slot. I didn’t hear Huge’s reaction to the show (because Dan Patrick was on!) and I didn’t hear the delayed show. I’m sure he’s pissed but sometimes radio hosts downplay setbacks like this. A few quickly scribbled thoughts: * I’m not a fan of the Dan Patrick show. To me, Patrick is still a witty teleprompter highlight reader and not a radio host. The cute frat boy towel whipping humor is really for the birds. * I’d prefer a local host, Huge included, cover this critical slot especially during football season. I still miss Dennis Fithian [MVictors interview] and without knowing the financials behind the decision, think it was a big…
