October 11, 2014 | Ann Arbor, MI | vs. Penn State

UNIFORM:  The adidas ‘Go Blue’ TECHFIT football uniform in unveiled with the following notes:
JERSEY: Description from the athletic department:

The jersey and pants feature metallic blue, laser-cut stripes that shine under the lights while ultra-light, no-sew metallic numbers stretch with the jersey, and the compression base layer features the Michigan “M” on the bicep and “GO BLUE” across the chest.

HELMET:  Nosebumper, unchanged since 1985 when the manufacturer name was replaced with a label reading ‘MICHIGAN’, now features an embossed block M:

LEGENDS:  WR Devin Funchess relinquishes the #87 Ron Kramer jersey/patch to wear the iconic (but not Legend) #1 jersey.  To start the 2014 season the #11 (Wisterts), #87 (Ron Kramer) and #21 (Desmond Howard) are not on the roster.

JERSEY/PANTS:  The U-M athletic department announces the team will wear “the new ‘Go Blue’ TECHFIT football uniform’ against Penn State on October 11, 2014.

MISC:  Michigan announces the hiring of equipment manager Brad Berlin to replace longtime (1974-2013) equipment manager Jon Falk.

December 28, 2013 | Tempe, AZ | Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl vs. Kansas State

JERSEY:  Team wears white jerseys with sponsor patch on left chest.  Note an accommodation was made to keep the Legends patch in the same slot, as the sponsor patch was set just over the left collar:

LEGENDS: 1940 Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon’s #98, retired after Harmon’s final game after the 1940 season, returns to the field.  QB Devin Gardner switches from #12 to #98, and also wears the Harmon Legends patch on the left front of the jersey:Gardner 98

LEGENDS: U-M athletic department releases names of players that will wear the open Michigan Football Legend jersey/patches for 2013:

  • Tight end Devin Funchess:  #87 Ron Kramer
  • Defensive back Courtney Avery: #11 The Wistert brothers
  • Wide Receiver Jeremy Gallon: #21 Desmond Howard

COLORS:  Michigan confirms the official color tone for maize and blue.  According to James Tobin in this piece in Michigan Today:

in 2013, U-M’s branding chief, Steve Busch, did a careful survey and found no fewer than 12 shades of Michigan blue in use — “way too many.” So he went in search of just one “intelligent, inventive, and noble shade of blue.” He got thinking about the dark blue panels he used to see when he was a kid selling frozen treats on the concourse of Michigan Stadium, and he found out the Athletic Department had brought it back, using a hue in the Pantone Color Matching System called Pantone 282 c. It’s a combination of 100 parts cyan (a greenish-blue), 60 parts magenta (a light purple), and 60 parts black.

JERSEY: Team wears a special patch on the left chest that reads ‘CS Mott Children’s Hospital, Spring Game’. Also, note that during spring practice quarterbacks wear orange Nike-manufactured Oregon State jerseys with black numbers with the Adidas logo sewn on (left).  During Spring Game, quarterbacks wear Adidas manufactured orange jerseys (right):

January 1, 2013 | Tampa, FL | Outback Bowl vs. South Carolina

HELMET:  Helmets were painted with a matte finish for the first time in team history.  From the official release: “…U-M will don a helmet with the traditional maize wings and a slightly different navy finish”

MatteJERSEY: From the official release: “The Wolverines will feature a white jersey with blue across the shoulders and down to the sleeve. A maize block ‘M’ will appear on the left and right sleeves of the jersey, and the player numbers will be maize with a blue outline, while the player’s last name will appear in blue. The phrase, “It’s Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine,” will be stitched into the inside neck of the jersey and will be displayed on blue and white undershirts.” 

Also, a bowl sponsor patch appears on the left chest.

November 10, 2012 | Ann Arbor, MI | vs. Northwestern

LEGENDS/JERSEY: Michigan officially unretires the #11 jersey of the Wistert brothers – Francis Albert, and Alvin.   Safety Jordan Kovacs becomes the first player honored with the #11 and wears the Legends patch on his jersey.

September 1, 2012 | Dallas, TX | vs. Alabama, Cowboys Classic

HELMET: Helmet numbers return from the 2011 season. The font is modified to a block style, color is a brighter shade of maize to the maize uniform color. 

HELMET: The team wears a Cowboys Classic logo sticker on the back of the helmet:

HELMET:  For 2012 (and continued in 2013), Michigan unveils “a new paint technology on the maize wings on the helmet in order…” and “create a more durable surface.”   Note that the paint also included gold “flecks” or flakes:

JERSEY:  For this neutral-site game, the team wears a road/white jersey with maize across the shoulders and down to the sleeve. Blue piping separates the maize from the white on the jersey. A blue block ‘M’ appears on the sleeves. Inside the jersey, the neckline features a block M logo:

January 3, 2012 | New Orleans, LA| Sugar Bowl vs. Virginia Tech

JERSEY: The team wears a white/road jersey with two blue stripes on each shoulder, a blue neckline, and a blue block M on the upper right chest. The sugar Bowl logo with a sponsor patch is placed on the left chest.

November 19, 2011 | Ann Arbor, MI | vs. Nebraska

JERSEY:  In recognition of Military Appreciation Day, Michigan adds a red, white, and blue American flag (with maize stitching) patch to the left chest of the jersey “to honor veterans.” (The patch is also worn the following week at home against Ohio State).

HELMET: The team adds a US flag sticker to the lower right back of the helmet.

October 15, 2011 | East Lansing, MI | vs. Michigan State

JERSEY:  Michigan changes its uniforms after pregame warm-ups to a white/road version similar to the Under the Lights/Notre Dame jerseys.  The upper left chest features a block ‘M’. Maize and blue stripes run down each shoulder to the end of the sleeve.
PANTS: The team wears white pants, with blue block ‘M’ on the left thigh.

2011 Michigan uniforms vs. Michigan State

September 10, 2011 | Ann Arbor, MI | vs. Notre Dame

JERSEY:  Special ‘throwback’ uniforms revealed prior to the 2011 season.  Jerseys feature a large block ‘M’ on the mid-chest, mini jersey number on the left chest, maize and blue-stripes from the shoulder to the end of the sleeves.
HELMET:  As part of the throwback look, helmets have gray facemasks and helmet number decals on the sides.  The shade of maize on the helmet numbers is darker than the helmet “wings” and jersey tones.
LEGENDS:  Michigan Football Legends program begins.  Current players will wear the jersey numbers of former U-M standouts.  On this day Desmond Howard’s #21 enters the Legends program; WR Junior Hemingway wears #21 with an honorary patch on the right side of the jersey:
