We’ve actually been there before! Did you know Michigan played a pair of neutral-site football games in Indianapolis? The good news: Michigan is undefeated and unscored upon in these games. The bad news: these were played 129 and 114 years ago. :( [lead photo: U-M Bentley Historical Library]
October 22, 1892: Michigan 18, DePauw 0
The pre-Victors Wolverines were indeed victorious in this game against DePauw played at the “Old YMCA ball grounds” in Indy. The star of the game? George Jewett! Yes, the same man we now honor with the trophy bearing his name and likeness that is secured away in Schembechler Hall.
Jewett accounted for 14 of U-M’s 18 points with two TDs (then worth five points) & two conversions. Better yet, in the middle of the game, Jewett moved “like a panther” and flattened a violently racist DePauw student. Even better, immediately after he KO’d this punk Jewett lined back up on the field before the next play! Check out this account of the incident from The Indianapolis Journal:
Oh, so Jewett was also a complete badass. I love that we play for this trophy!
October 19, 1907: Michigan 22, Wabash 0
A decade and a half later we faced off with the Wabash “Little Giants” at Washington Park near downtown Indianapolis. Michigan cruised in what was a sloppy but entertaining game in front of a solid contingent of Wolverine fans who made the trip to the Hoosier state. Yost put in the scrubs after we tallied 22.
I’ll say it: think we got all of the fumbles out of our system in 1907.
What about 2021? Still undecided? At least look over the latest options on TicketIQ. Their prices are 10%-15% cheaper than StubHub because they don’t hit you with ridiculous fees. Just like other sites, you can sort by price or value, and they provide the vantage point from the seat location before you check out. Prices are trending down but eventually supply comes into play – check them out!
