• Wiping Woody Hayes!

Most installments of eBay Watch feature items that pre-date the Bo-Woody era, but occasionally there's something that catches the eye. What we've got here is a genuine roll of toilet paper featuring the visage of legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, currently listed on eBay. I've seen these type of things before [insert team name on toilet paper] but the cartoon likeness of Old Dr. Strangehayes makes this one special:

  • 1978 Ohio State Highlights (YouTube)

Another gem from WolverineHistorian on the YouTube. Don’t miss ABC’s interview with Ricky Leach as he’s being mobbed on the field (in Columbus!): A YouTube viewer asked if this was the game where Woody was punching himself on the sidelines near the end. WH replied: Yes it was. But while looking through the game, I couldn’t find the footage even though I’ve read in articles that it was caught on TV. I’ll have to go back again and see if maybe I missed it. Of course the next game Hayes stopped punching himself and instead punched a Clemson players, effectively ending his career. You can see this clip here. Elsewhere: Don’t miss Michigan Sports Center and The House that Yost Built on the hockey team’s 5-1 over Niagra in Albany. By the way, I caught the beginning of WTKA’s broadcast and Jim Hunt offered up his feelings on the arena in Albany: “and I thought Joe Louis [Arena] was a dump.” Great stuff.

  • TP a Buckeye

Take? – Expected it, never felt like it was a realistic possibility given Michigan was late in the game – I’m not too worked up over this – I’ve seen too many can’t miss players miss to be too concerned – I think Rodriguez will get his offense going one way or another – Not going to start calling the kid a criminal/loser because he didn’t come to Michigan

  • Ultimate Michigan Football Highlight? You Decide

You like me have likely been suffering through ESPN’s tournament for the greatest sports highlight of all time (which inexplicably contains an entry with no actual footage and may have never actually happened: Babe Ruth’s called shot). I typically hate these things unless there’s some Michigan-related element to it (see Legg’s goal winning the ESPY). To make a bit interesting I rolled my head through the greatest highlights in Michigan football in the past 40 years or so. Several came to mind and I’m certainly missing some of your favorites. My favorite? See the pic that leads this story. I was in the upper deck in Spartan Stadium on the same side of the field and saw the whole thing. My head almost exploded when I realized what I had just watched. Here’s a poll and get your takes and feel free to add your own entry: {democracy} Here’s what I could find on the YouTube. Thankfully I witnessed each of these in person except for the great Wangler to Carter game winner and of course the Harmon ditty:

  • Yes Sir! Three Straight as Buckeyes Fall

Just great to see these guys starting to pull it together. What a win over the hated Buckeyes and such a great way to start wrapping up the season. The guys that stayed never seemed to waver on Beilein’s system but either way it’s great to see some of the struggle start to pay off. Coach Rodriguez addressed the fans at halftime and guaranteed that the team would be wearing Maize and Blue when they come out of the tunnel. Oh, and they’ll play real hard as well.

  • Recruit Brandon Smith wants 4 Buckeye scalps

WTKA and Sam Webb hosted their fifth annual Signing Day Extravaganza yesterday afternoon. They interviewed several players and coaches including Coach Rod. I caught some of the show on my 3 hour drive home from Lansing. My new hero? New Jersey recruit and now permanent Michigan Man Brandon Smith. During Webb’s interview Brandon Smith made four unsolicited references to beating Ohio State. The cocky multi-skilled Smith capped it off when he mentioned that a defining moment in his career would be his 4 wins over Ohio State! It was so great – I’ll look for audio but it was a beauty. He also is friends with Sam McGuffie and told everyone not to worry, that Sam would come around. Sure enough. Update: Second best thing that happened yesterday, Will Ferrell live at the Breslin Center on MSU’s campus. As Anchorman character Ron Burgundy, he did an interview with Tom Izzo and asked the Spartan coach if he was a legal dwarf.

  • Hilarious

Left me rolling on the floor – from mgoblog today [full post]: — ——————————————————— I present this thing from the CBS Sportsline message boards: I just flew back from Pittsburg and guess who sat nect to me on the flight. Jerome Bettis. I sat and talked football with him for about 2 hours. Guess what he told me. Terrell Pryor is going to Michigan. Was never a doubt in his mind after the official visit. This was passed onto him from Charlie Batch who he had just been out with the night prior to his flight with me. As a Buckeye fan I’m crushed, and don’t want to believe it. It even took away from the fact that I was sitting next to an NFL future HOF player and talking with him. I can furnish a photo upon request of myself and “The Bus” if needed. I hate when Darth Rodruigez and the evil empire wins. The horrible grammar and spelling immediately raises suspicions until “As a Buckeye fan” explains them away. ———————————————————– Of course all you recruitniks are less concerned with Brian’s towel snap at the Buckeye than the validity of the story. • Michigan Outdoors Man

It’s always great to catch up with former Michigan players. I recently chatted with Captain Michael Tilmann II, defensive back for Coach Moeller from 1991-1993. While his playing career was hampered by two knee surgeries, he went on to found Tilmann Outfitters, a premium vacation and fishing charter service out of beautiful Manistee, Michigan. He’s highly regarded in fishing circles and has hosted several shows on The Outdoor Channel. He was kind enough to speak with me: What are some of your best memories of your playing days? Tilmann: You mean the best memories that I can share?! It’d have to be having Bo come to speak to us before big games such as the Rose Bowls, Notre Dame, and of course against Ohio State. The respect he commanded when he walked into the full team meeting room was unmatched! As far as the games, the highlights were the ’92 and ’93 Rose Bowls, each against Washington. We lost the first with Elvis but won the second with Todd Collins. Here’s a photo from Pasadena on the sideline with Bo: Have you always wanted to be a fisherman?Tilmann: Yes, I’ve always loved to fish and this has been a lifelong dream of mine. That said, I’m proud to say I received my BS in Education. I am a teacher first…
